BLACKfootNotes celebrates the lives and legacies of four outstanding and unheralded African-American women scientists, Drs. Eliza Anna Grier, Geraldine Pittman Woods, Jane Cooke Wright, and Evelyn Boyd Granville. These women’s scientific accomplishments have been largely hidden by history. “The show celebrates the rebellious spirits of these women whose lives spanned a century, from slavery to the Apollo Space program,” says Amas Producing Artistic Director Donna Trinkoff. “These courageous women provide role models for inner-city young students, particularly girls and young women. They overcame extraordinary odds and made a real difference in our society. That most of us have never heard of them is incredible.”

The cast includes Julia Lema (Ain’t Misbehavin, Lena Horne—the Lady and Her Music), Sherry Boone (Jelly’s Last Jam, Marie Christine), Chaundra Cameron (Yo, Alice!, Legends), and Gia McGlone (Aida, Beehive). Nick Petrie makes his New York directorial debut. William Foster McDaniel (Bubbling Brown Sugar) music directs.

Amas will offer BLACKfootNotes in New York City public schools later this year and next as part of Lens on Live Theatre, the Amas education program that helps young people consider behavior, education and career choices that will positively shape their lives and their communities.
